Texts of Persecution In Girard and Conspiracy Theories In Manzoni: a Pre-crime Approach

Take a look at my last (draft) paper under peer review:

"In Le bouc émissaire René Girard examined a work by the French poet Guillaume de Machouat, to return on the 'texts of persecution' during The Back Death. In this paper I suggest the emergence of both conspiracy theories and vindication texts, similar to ones still being used by contemporary terrorists, during the second wave of plague in Europe in the seventeenth century. This emergence was highlighted in Milan by Alessandro Manzoni, the nineteenth-century Italian Catholic novelist, poet and essayist. According to Girard the reconciliation mimesis to the detriment of the victim is culturally defined by myths and with less and less effectiveness by persecution texts. In analysing Manzoni's work, I will argue that vindications and conspiracy theories are the legacy of the persecution texts of the Early Modern Age: from texts by writers who "consider themselves judges", Guillaume de Machouat in Girard, to texts by people who are in fact judges, those in Milan in Manzoni's Storia della Colonna Infame. Furthermore, this analysis tries to give some evidence on the role the victims of political violence, both by states and nonstate actors, such as the victims of the Shoah and of terrorism, and their contribute to the efforts to find narratives that counter conspiracy theories and improve the efficacy of crime prevention work".

Memorials for victims of terrorism and their possible value for P/CVE

My last paper for the European Commission/Radicalisation Awareness Network: "Memorials for victims of terrorism and their possible value for P/CVE – Different approaches within the EU".

Throughout the EU, for over a century, Member States (MSs) have suffered from different forms of war, atrocities and terrorism and have developed different approaches in the way of managing the memory of such conflicts.

The focus of this paper is on the ways in which memorials for victims of terrorism (VoT) have been used in the context of preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE), outlining the most common approaches in different MSs and giving recommendations directed at first-line practitioners working in areas that could encompass memorials in their work (e.g. educators, local authorities, community workers, exit workers, probation workers, social workers) and policymakers at local, national and European levels looking to learn more from ongoing experiences amongst EU MSs and abroad, and to reflect on their own plans and frameworks.

Both the definition of “victim” and the definition of “terrorism” are discussed both academically and politically; P/CVE policies and strategies have different approaches in different MSs, as well as different historical backgrounds and political contexts and violence heritages, so this paper includes final notes and a bibliography for those readers interested in more in-depth knowledge on the many aspects around the topic.

Terrorism: linking the psychology of the survivors to that of the executioners

Terrorismo. Vittime contesti e resilienza

"Luca Guglielminetti proposes some important reflections, developed as a consultant to the Italian Association of Victims of Terrorism (Aiviter), as a member of the board of the Italian Group for the Study of Terrorism (GRIST) and of the Radicalisation Awareness Network (RAN) set up by the European Commission. It is an articulated and innovative look, able to connect different episodes and phenomena, in the long history of terrorism. In particular, he offers tools to connect the psychology of victims and the psychology of terrorists. Fear, shame, a sense of helplessness, a desire for revenge and justice, can be linked together to the point of fuelling the spiral of violence. Only a strong awareness of the profound links that bind the psychology of the survivors to that of the executioners can allow us to break the circuits of violence. The peaceful radicalisation of the victims of terrorism is thus presented as a constructive way of countering the phenomena of violent radicalisation which feeds the ranks of terrorists."

Social Perception of the Victims of Terrorism

Draft essay for the Italian review "Rassegna Italiana di Criminologia".

Abstract

Only in the last decade - since the establishment of the Memorial Day for the victims of terrorism  in 2007 -  arises the growing centrality of the victims in the Italian debate. The essay tries to explain the reasons for this delay, thirty years from the so called  'lead years' (1969-1987), and the various problems of social perception of the victims of this particular crime. Starting from the personal experience of the author, the Aiviter association's documentation, and the scarcity of scientific literature available, various forms of double victimization and victim blaming are highlighted and got in touch with mass-media, politics and the difficulty of exiting the conflict, because a lack of reconciliation process.
